NEW DELHI — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria called on Sunday for an immediate overhaul of global governance structures and international financial systems, positioning Africa’s largest economy as a primary gateway for emerging market investments.
In an address delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, President Tinubu urged member nations to reform institutions like the United Nations Security Council and traditional financial networks to better reflect contemporary global demographics and economic weight.
”A nation that owns no technology risks renting its future,” President Tinubu warned, advocating for developing nations to transition from technology consumers to intellectual property owners.
Key Objectives of Nigeria’s BRICS Strategy
Global Systemic Reform: Accelerating restructuring of international financial systems and expanding Global South representation in global governance.
Economic Gateway: Positioning Nigeria’s market of over 200 million people as an entry point under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Tech & Digital Infrastructure: Seeking technical partnerships in artificial intelligence, digital public services, cybersecurity, and telecommunications via local initiatives like Project BRIDGE.
Balanced Energy & Climate Goals: Securing affordable climate finance while developing critical minerals, natural gas, and renewable energy to power local manufacturing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India opened the summit by highlighting the growing influence of the BRICS bloc among developing nations, pointing to new initiatives like the BRICS MSME Cooperation Portal and the Urban Mobility Hub designed to streamline trade and skills development across partner countries.
For Nigeria, the summit represents a concrete step toward attracting non-Western investment, advancing technology transfer, and securing sustainable development finance under President Tinubu’s domestic economic roadmap.
