LAGOS, Nigeria – Hope that the Department of State Service(DSS) will turn a new leaf has been dashed with the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to name Alhaji Yusuf Magaji Bichi, from Kano as the new Director General of the DSS.

By the development, the President has rejected the appointment made in his absence by then Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. Osinbajo appointed Mathew Seiyefa from Bayelsa as the DG DSS following the sack of Musa Daura for his infamous invasion of the National Assembly and the homes of President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

The development further confirms the insinuation that President Muhammadu Buhari was not in agreement with the decision of the VP to fire Daura, whom many say has been doing the bidding of President Buhari.

Till date Daura has not been prosecuted for treasonable offence, following the invasion of the National Assembly. Moreover, many Nigerians cannot understand the decision of the President to fire Seiyefa who had promised to reform the DSS, which has been turned into an instrument for oppressing Nigerians. Moreover, the new man, Bichi is from the north and less qualified in the DSS service than Seiyefa.

After the sack of Daura, Osinbajo ordered him to handover to the most senior officer which is Seiyefa, raising question of morality in the appointment of Bichi ahead of Seiya.

However, the appointment of Bichi takes effect from 14th of September, 2018. Bichi attended Danbatta Secondary School, the Kano State College of Advanced Studies and the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he graduated with a degree in Political Science. The new Director-General began his career in the security division of the Cabinet Office in Kano, from where he joined the defunct Nigerian Security Organization (NSO), the precursor of the present DSS.

Mr. Bichi has undergone training in intelligence processing analysis, agent handling recruitment and intelligence processing in the UK, as well as strategic training at the National Defence College. The new DSS boss comes to the job with skills in intelligence gathering, research analysis, conflict management, general investigation, risk and vulnerability operations, counter intelligence and protective operation and human resources management.

In the course of his career, Mr. Bichi has worked as the State Director of Security in Jigawa, Niger, Sokoto and Abia States. He was at various times the Director, National Assembly Liaison, (National War College), Director at National Headquarters in the Directorate of Security Enforcement, Directorate of Operations, Directorate of Intelligence, Directorate of Inspection and Directorate of Administration and Finance. He also served as Director at State Service Academy. Mr Bichi is married and with children.
