ELCHE 0-5 BARCELONA
Reigning champions Barcelona got their La Liga title defense off to an explosive, statement-making start with a dazzling 5-0 annihilation of Elche at the Estadio Martínez Valero.
Fronted by a vintage captain’s performance from Raphinha, midfield magic from Fermín López, and immediate fireworks from new summer signings, Hansi Flick’s side laid down a terrifying marker for the campaign ahead.
The visitors dominated the narrative early and opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Captain Raphinha was chopped down inside the penalty area by Victor Chust before stepping up to coolly send Matías Dituro the wrong way from the spot.
Elche worked hard to plug the gaps, but Barcelona’s ruthless transitions proved far too sharp. Deep into first-half injury time, summer blockbuster acquisition Karim Adeyemi marked his competitive club debut with a glorious debut goal. Latching onto a sublime through-ball from Raphinha, the German speedster galloped into space and calmly slotted his finish past the keeper to make it 2-0 before the interval.
If the first half showed clinical control, the second half was pure blitzkrieg. English winger Anthony Gordon entered the fray off the bench for his debut in the 65th minute and instantly terrorized the host’s defense.
Just two minutes after stepping onto the pitch, Gordon whipped an inch-perfect pass across the box for Raphinha to tap home his second goal of the night. Gordon wasn’t done; four minutes later, the former Premier League star carried the ball from inside his own half before unselfishly teeing up substitute Fermín López for Barca’s fourth.
Fermín completed the five-goal destruction in the 79th minute with a moment of individual brilliance, turning his defender inside out on the edge of the box and drilling a finish into the bottom corner.
The underlying match statistics reflected total control by the Catalans. Barcelona controlled 54 percent of ball possession over Elche’s 46 percent, but the key differences lay in attacking execution.
Barcelona recorded an eye-watering expected goals (xG) metric of 4.13, while Elche accumulated just 0.70 xG. Flick’s men registered 12 total shot attempts with 7 hitting the target, in stark contrast to Elche’s 7 total attempts and just 2 on target.
Barcelona created 9 big chances, successfully converting 5 of them. Inside the penalty area, the champions logged 22 touches to Elche’s 17 and notched 10 attempts from inside the box. Barca completed 457 of their 523 attempted passes, entering the final third 49 times compared to Elche’s 39 entries.
Defensively, Barcelona broke up play effectively with 24 tackles, 12 interceptions, and 34 clearances to secure a spotless clean sheet for new keeper Joan García.
