YENAGOA — The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has been honoured with a Special Award of Excellence by the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) for his commitment to gender equality and women’s advancement in the region.
The award was presented to the NDDC Chief Executive Officer during the 2026 Bayelsa State Convention of the NCWS, held at the Cultural Centre in Yenagoa under the theme: “Women: Crown for Influence; Your Voice, Your Values, Your Vision.”
The First Lady of Bayelsa State, Dr. (Mrs.) Gloria Douye Diri, presented the award on behalf of the NCWS.
Key Highlights from the NCWS Convention
Keynote Speaker: Prof. Oyintonyo Michael-Olomu highlighted that women are built for leadership, urging them to use their voices for power, unity, and social transformation.
She stressed that meaningful influence must be rooted in strong values and a clear vision.
First Lady’s Charge: Dr. (Mrs.) Gloria Douye Diri reminded attendees of the weight of the “crown” women carry, noting that their conduct directly reflects their character and values.
Award Presentation: The NCWS Award of Excellence was bestowed upon Dr. Samuel Ogbuku in recognition of NDDC initiatives targeting healthcare, skill acquisition, and socio-economic support for Niger Delta women.
Receiving the award on behalf of the NDDC Managing Director, the Commission’s Director of Culture and Women Affairs, Mrs. Ahunna Imoni, expressed gratitude to the NCWS for the recognition.
Imoni described the honour as well-deserved, stating that Dr. Ogbuku has consistently prioritized the advancement of women across the Niger Delta.
She cited various commission-led interventions that continue to expand women’s access to vital healthcare, skill development, and financial independence.
She assured the gathering that under Ogbuku’s leadership, the NDDC remains steadfast in expanding its gender-focused programmes to improve the overall well-being and empowerment of women across the region.
