KANO, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (NEC) has said that the fire incident that gutted the Kano Data Centre of INEC will not affect its operation as every data in the centre has been backed up even though the fire razed everything within the centre.
In a statement, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman Voter Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye said the fire incident happened at the INEC Data Processing Centre at the State INEC office in Kano.
He said the fire incident started at 10:15 am and that it engulfed the Data Processing Centre before it was contained by officials of the Federal Fire Service. According to him, staff of the commission made spirited effort to put it out using fire extinguishers but that they were overwhelmed before the fire service put it out.

“Fortunately, all the data in the voter register for the state as well as other sensitive documents of the state office are backed-up offsite and therefore safe. They will be recovered swiftly”, he said.
