MANCHESTER UNITED starlet Amad Diallo announced himself on the world stage in the most dramatic fashion imaginable, coming off the bench to smash a 90th-minute winner and hand Ivory Coast a dream start to their 2026 World Cup campaign.
In a breathtakingly chaotic Group E encounter in Philadelphia that saw the woodwork rattled an incredible four times, it was the 23-year-old winger who provided the clinical touch just as a goalless stalemate seemed written in the stars.
The dramatic late blow did more than just secure three points for Les Éléphants—it brutally shattered Ecuador’s magnificent 19-game unbeaten run dating back to September 2024.
A capacity crowd of 68,274 turned Lincoln Financial Field into a sea of Ecuadorian yellow, and La Tri played with the ferocity of a home side. They completely dominated the opening half-hour, pressing the African champions into uncharacteristic errors.
The South Americans will leave Pennsylvania wondering what voodoo magic cursed the Ivorian goal. First, John Yeboah capitalised on a defensive loose ball, unleashing a ferocious left-footed drive that thundered back off the crossbar.
Minutes later, Pedro Vite sliced open the Ivorian backline with a genius pass to release Alan Minda, only for his clipped effort to suffer the exact same fate against the frame of the goal.
Ivory Coast captain Franck Kessié set a brutally physical tone, picking up one of three first-half yellow cards for the Africans as they desperately fought to stay afloat.
The second half saw the African giants wake up, largely thanks to the terrifying pace of Leipzig attacker Yan Diomande down the right flank.
In the 52nd minute, Diomande turned provider, picking out Elye Wahi whose first-time flick beat Hernán Galíndez but slammed against the crossbar to level the woodwork tally.
Seeing his side lack a final product, Ivory Coast boss Emerse Faé made the call that won the match, throwing Amad Diallo into the fray in the 56th minute.
Ecuador still had their moments; Gonzalo Plata forced a world-class, flying save out of Yahia Fofana with a 25-yard thunderbolt in the 68th minute, while Enner Valencia clip-shot the post from a tight angle.
But with the clock ticking into the 90th minute, the Ivorian substitute struck. Towering defender Wilfried Singo embarked on a sensational, gut-busting run from deep inside his own half, driving relentlessly into the Ecuadorian penalty area.
He picked his head up and rolled a perfectly weighted pass across the box.
Arriving on cue was United’s dynamic winger Diallo, who calmly guided a pinpoint, left-footed strike past the diving Galíndez, sparking pure bedlam in the Ivorian dugout.
Ecuador threw everything forward during six agonizing minutes of stoppage time, but the African champions held firm to secure a historic clean sheet.
Ivory Coast now sit joint-top of Group E alongside Germany, whom they face next on June 20 in a blockbuster clash, while Ecuador must dust themselves down to face Curacao.
