September 5, 2014 – The Minister of Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau has said that schools throughout the federation will now resume September 22 , 2014 instead of October 13 earlier announced by the Federal Government.

The minister made the announcement after the National Council of Education meeting in Abuja. The meeting had in attendance the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike and Commissioners for Education from all the 36 states of the federation.

He said the ministry opted to move the date backward based on assurance from the Minister for Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu that government has effectively contained the Ebola Virus Disease(EVD) and thus there was no need to keep the children at home any further.

Meanwhile there are currently only two confirmed cases of Ebola in Nigeria. One receiving treatment in isolation centre in Lagos while the other is also being treated in isolation centre in Port Harcourt.

So far a total of seven people have died of EVD in Nigeria while 9 people have survived the ailment.
