LAGOS – Nigerian music icon Waje has delivered a shocking bombshell, revealing she was never paid a single penny—or even one naira—for her iconic verse on the massive global hit, “Do Me.”
The multi-award-winning songstress, who lent her powerful vocals to the 2008 smash by Afrobeats legends P-Square, said the stress of hearing her voice everywhere while receiving no financial compensation drove her into depression.
But the betrayal didn’t stop there. The singer claims that after her verse helped turn the song into an international chart-topper, the duo, Peter and Paul Okoye (P-Square), jetted off to South Africa to film the music video—without telling her.
”I was hearing my voice constantly,” Waje revealed, “on the radio, in clubs, everywhere. But I had absolutely nothing. Worse, I wasn’t even in the video. I felt completely erased.”
The emotional toll of the ordeal was severe. She confessed that being forced to relive the success of the song daily, knowing she was excluded from the financial rewards and visual representation, was deeply distressing.
The “Do Me” track became one of the biggest songs of the era, elevating P-Square to global superstardom, but Waje, who helped define the track with her soaring contribution, was left with nothing but an empty bank account and a broken heart.
The star tried repeatedly to resolve the issue, sending multiple letters to P-Square’s management team.
Shockingly, she says she was met with a wall of silence.
”I wrote to them so many times, and they never, ever replied,” she stated.
The revelation casts a dark shadow over one of Afrobeats’ most beloved hits, exposing the harsh realities and alleged sharp practices of the early 2000s music industry.
P-Square is yet to respond to the singer’s damning claims.
