ABUJA — The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has extended the application deadline for the fourth edition of its flagship Hackathon Live Show. Prospective innovators and tech talent now have until Monday, August 17, 2026, to submit their proposals.
The decision to shift the cut-off date from the initial deadline offers tech entrepreneurs, developers, and researchers additional room to refine their solutions and submit competitive prototypes.
Themed “Technology Without Barriers: Innovative Solutions for People With Disabilities,” the fourth edition of the national innovation initiative aims to bridge the digital divide by fostering locally developed assistive technologies for Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs).
Focus Areas and Submission Scope
The telecom regulator is inviting young Nigerian creators aged 18 to 35 residing in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to develop digital solutions addressing critical accessibility challenges.
According to guidelines released by the Commission, targeted innovation areas include:
AI Speech-to-Text Tools: Solutions optimized for low-bandwidth environments.
Sign Language Recognition Systems: AI-driven platforms translating sign language into readable text or audio.
Image-to-Voice Navigation: Tools designed to assist visually impaired individuals in spatial awareness and public navigation.
Voice-Enabled Platforms: Feedback and customer service channels geared toward telecom consumers with physical or visual limitations.
Inclusive Employment Engines: Digital portals matching PWDs with equitable job opportunities.
Accessible USSD & Customer Systems: Telecommunications service workflows adapted for seamless accessibility.
The Commission highlighted that while teams with functional prototypes or working demos hold an added advantage, innovative concepts at the early stage are also welcome for consideration. PWD-inclusive teams and individual PWD innovators are strongly encouraged to apply.
Background: NCC’s Drive for Digital Inclusion and Local Content
The NCC Hackathon series forms a core pillar of the commission’s strategy to promote local content development, tech entrepreneurship, and digital inclusion within the Nigerian telecommunications ecosystem.
Previous editions of the NCC Hackathon focused on solving critical sector challenges, such as cloud computing implementation, Internet of Things (IoT) applications for agriculture, and cybersecurity tools for telecom infrastructure. By aligning the 4th edition strictly with assistive technologies, the regulator reinforces national efforts to ensure vulnerable and underserved populations benefit equally from Nigeria’s expanding digital economy.
Under its current regulatory direction, the NCC continues to mandate universal accessibility across network services. Enhancing technological accessibility for PWDs directly aligns with national policies on social inclusion, legal frameworks guaranteeing the rights of persons with disabilities, and international standards for equitable digital access.

Shortlisted candidates for the 4th Edition Hackathon Live Show will gain direct access to seasoned mentors, industry experts, accessibility advocates, and venture builders.
Finalists will present their solutions before an expert panel comprising regulatory executives, telecom operators, private investors, and development agency representatives. Beyond commercialization opportunities, winning teams will compete for cash prizes, pilot deployment support, and potential nomination to international innovation showcases.
