LAGOS, Nigeria- Verve, Africa’s leading domestic payment cards and tokens brand, has launched its tokenisation solution, enabling eligible Verve cardholders to use compatible mobile devices to make secure and convenient contactless payments.
The solution allows eligible Verve cards to be tokenised and provisioned on compatible mobile devices, enabling customers to make contactless payments at supported terminals using their devices. It also provides banks and financial institutions across Nigeria with the capability to integrate tokenised payments into their digital banking and payment offerings.
Tokenisation is an important development in digital payments because it replaces sensitive card information with a unique digital token when a card is provisioned for digital use. The underlying card details are not exposed during the digital payment transaction, helping to limit the use of sensitive payment information while supporting a seamless payment experience.
For consumers, this means greater flexibility in how they use their cards. Once an eligible Verve card is tokenised and provisioned on a compatible mobile device, customers can make contactless payments using their device at supported terminals, without needing to present their physical card.
The technology also supports the growing shift towards mobile-first payments, giving consumers another way to pay while enabling financial institutions to extend the functionality of existing payment cards through their digital channels. Rather than requiring customers to adopt an entirely new payment relationship, tokenisation allows eligible cards to be securely provisioned for digital use.
Commenting on the launch, Vincent Ogbunude, Managing Director, Verve International, said the introduction of tokenisation reflects the continued evolution of the payments landscape, as consumers increasingly interact with financial services through digital and mobile channels.
He noted that the technology provides a practical way for payment cards to support these changing behaviours, while creating opportunities for financial institutions to extend the functionality of their existing card offerings through digital channels.
“The launch of our tokenisation solution marks an important step in our commitment to delivering payment experiences that are secure, convenient and aligned with how consumers increasingly want to pay. By enabling Verve cardholders to securely tokenise their cards and use their mobile devices for contactless payments, we are expanding the ways customers can access and use their cards while providing an added layer of protection for their digital payment credentials. We look forward to working with more financial institutions to make this capability available to their customers across Nigeria,” he said.
The tokenisation experience is designed to be integrated into participating financial institutions’ digital channels, allowing eligible customers to provision their Verve cards for mobile contactless payments. Once activated, customers can use compatible mobile devices to make payments at supported contactless terminals, subject to applicable device and authentication requirements.
For financial institutions, tokenisation provides an opportunity to respond to increasing demand for secure, convenient and mobile payment experiences while extending the value of their existing card offerings. By incorporating tokenised payments into their digital channels, institutions can give eligible Verve cardholders an additional way to use their cards and engage with digital payment services.
As digital payments continue to evolve, tokenisation is becoming an increasingly important component of payment infrastructure. By separating the digital payment credential from the underlying card information, it helps reduce the exposure of sensitive payment data while enabling convenient digital transactions.
Verve’s tokenisation solution forms part of the brand’s continued investment in payment innovation and its focus on developing solutions that respond to changing consumer behaviour and the evolution of the payments ecosystem. Combined with Mobile Tap-to-Pay, the capability expands the ways eligible Verve cardholders can use their cards in an increasingly mobile-first environment.
Verve continues to invest in payment solutions that make digital transactions more secure, convenient and accessible, while working with ecosystem partners to expand the ways consumers can use their cards and participate in the evolving digital payments ecosystem.
