SAYS PDP SET FOR VICTORY IN OSUN, 2015 POLL

This period is too critical for the health sector to be shut down,”the Governor said, pleading, “They (members of NMA) should go back to work while the Federal Government handles the issues raised because if we deny those who were affected by terrorists’ action opportunity to have health care … then we are subtly supporting the terrorists

July 13, 2014 – Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan at the weekend off ongoing strike, stressing that medical doctors ought not to go on strike at a time that Nigeria is at war with the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram, stressing that to withdraw medical services from victims of the insurgents amounts to nothing but active support for Boko Haram.

Uduaghan who made the call while speaking at an interaction with journalists in Asaba appealed to the NMA to call off its strike action in the overriding interest of the nation while government addressed their demands, adding that the current security situation does not warrant withdrawal of medical services.

“This period is too critical for the health sector to be shut down,”the Governor said, pleading, “They (members of NMA) should go back to work while the Federal Government handles the issues raised because if we deny those who were affected by terrorists’ action opportunity to have health care … then we are subtly supporting the terrorists.”

He commended the maturity with which delegates at the ongoing National Conference have been dealing with the contentious issue of derivation but pleaded with them to work towards a compromise position that would be acceptable to all parts of the country.

Uduaghan fired a warning salvo to other political parties ahead of the governorship election in Osun and the presidential polls in 2015, declaring that the party has clearer chances of winning than its rivals.

He noted that the oil producing states had pushed for “resource control that is 100 per cent but as we also know that we are all Nigerians, so there must be give and take.”

He revealed that there were some interactions between some of the governors from the oil producing states and their representatives where they shifted grounds to between 18 and 25 percent. The governor observed that despite the controversy the issue has generated at the conference, the delegates have displayed high sense of maturity in handling the matter.

“The people are all matured persons. I must commend them because it has not resorted to violence. There are negotiations going on and that is what it should be, give and take …we meet at a point that is convenient for all of us. I think that is where they are going to.

“I just think we should allow the negotiations to continue. It is good. It is good for us a country. It is good for democracy that we are on the same table negotiating. At the end of the day we must realise that we are in the same country.”

Uduaghan maintained that the PDP has with the emergence of its current National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu overcome the challenges that it experienced last year.

According to him, “PDP is still the number one party in the country. Yes we had our challenges last year but things are turning around. We have a game changer in the national chairman and things are changing.

“All of you are witnesses to what happened in the Ekiti elections. Osun election is coming and it is likely PDP will win. We are taking them one by one. By the time we get to the presidential election you will see that the coast is clear. So for us at the national level, PDP no shaking.”
