JERUSALEM — A newly surfaced video showing an Israeli soldier tossing a stun grenade into a parked vehicle carrying a Palestinian family has sparked international outrage and renewed scrutiny over military conduct in the occupied West Bank.
According to local reports and medical officials, the incident resulted in severe injuries to the occupants, leaving a young Palestinian child permanently blinded in one eye.
The footage, which rapidly circulated across social media platforms over the weekend, shows a soldier approaching the passenger side of a stationary car.
Without apparent physical provocation, the soldier opens the door, drops a stun grenade inside, and slams the door shut, trapping the family within the enclosed space as the device detonates.
A stun grenade, also known as a flashbang, is designed to produce a blinding flash of light and a deafening sound exceeding 170 decibels to temporarily disorient targets.
However, experts in military munitions note that when detonated inside a confined space such as an automobile, the resulting pressure wave, intense heat, and shrapnel carry a high risk of causing permanent bodily damage, including severe ocular trauma and hearing loss.
Human rights organizations condemned the action, calling for an immediate and transparent investigation. Defense for Children International–Palestine (DCIP) stated that the event underscores a broader pattern of physical harm inflicted on Palestinian minors by security forces.
In response to inquiries regarding the footage, an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson stated that the incident was under review by the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division to determine whether disciplinary or criminal charges will be filed against the soldier involved.
