TAIWAN – China has issued a strong statement to the United State, stressing that the U.S is supporting and cheering up separatist activities of “Taiwan independence”, describing the development as a very “dangerous fire-playing operation, and that those who play with fire will set themselves on fire”, China said, just as Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mrs. Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan, the breakaway province of China, defying threats and intimidation from China that there will be consequences if she goes ahead with the trip.
China has lodged a former protest letter with the United States through its consulate.
Nancy Pelosi said she made the trip to Taiwan in honor of U.S commitment to democracy, “reaffirming that the freedoms of Taiwan — and all democracies — must be respected”, she said and that the visit honors America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant Democracy.
“Our visit is part of our broader trip to the Indo-Pacific – including Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan – focused on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance.
“Our discussions with Taiwan leadership will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner and promoting our shared interests, including advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region. America’s solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy.
“Our visit is one of several Congressional delegations to Taiwan – and it in no way contradicts longstanding United States policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, U.S.-China Joint Communiques and the Six Assurances. The United States continues to oppose unilateral efforts to change the status quo”, she said.
However, Nancy Pelosi trip to Taiwan seems not have the support of President Joe Biden. Speaking on the visit, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peopled Republic of China issued a statement, stressing that Pelosi, , the speaker of the US House of Representatives, disregarded China’s strong opposition and solemn representations, visited the Taiwan region, seriously violating the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiques, seriously impacting the political foundation of Sino-US relations, seriously violating China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, seriously undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and sending a serious wrong signal to the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces.
According to the ministry, the Chinese side firmly opposes this, severely condemns it, and has lodged solemn representations and strong protests with the US side.
“There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate Government representing all of China”, the ministry said, adding that this was made clear in 1971 General Assembly resolution 2758.
“Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, 181 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle. The one-China principle is the universal consensus of the international community and the basic norm governing international relations.
“In 1979, the Us side made a clear commitment in the Sino-US Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations, “The United States of America recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China.” Within this context, the people of the United States will maintain cultural, commercial and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan.
“As a part of the US Government, the US Congress should strictly abide by the US Government’s one-China policy and not conduct any official exchanges with the Taiwan region. China has always opposed the visits of US congressmen to Taiwan, and the US executive branch has the responsibility to stop them”, the ministry added.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described her visit to Taiwan in any form and for any reason as ” a major political provocation to escalate official exchanges between the United States and Taiwan, and the Chinese side will never accept it, and the Chinese people will never agree”, the Ministry noted.
It added that the Taiwan issue is the most important, core, and sensitive issue in Sino-US relations. “At present, the situation in the Taiwan Strait is facing a new round of tension and severe challenges, and the fundamental reason is that the Taiwan authorities and the US side are constantly changing the status quo. The Taiwan authorities have repeatedly “relied on the United States to seek independence,” refused to recognize the “1992 Consensus,” vigorously pursued “de-Sinicization,” and promoted “gradual Taiwan independence.” However, the US side is attempting to engage in “using Taiwan to control China,” constantly distorting and hollowing out the one-China principle, strengthening official exchanges between the United States and Taiwan, and supporting and cheering up the separatist activities of “Taiwan independence.” This is a very dangerous fire-playing operation, and those who play with fire will set themselves on fire”
The ministry noted that the positions of the Chinese Government and the Chinese people on the Taiwan issue have been consistent.
“Resolutely safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the firm will of more than 1.4 billion Chinese people, and realizing the complete reunification of the motherland is the common aspiration and sacred duty of all the sons and daughters of China.
“The will of the people cannot be violated, and the general trend is irreversible. No country, any force or person should misjudge the strong determination, firm will and strong ability of the Chinese Government and people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity and realize national reunification and national rejuvenation”, the ministry said.
It noted that the correct way for China and the United States to get along can only be mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, avoiding confrontation, and win-win cooperation.
“The Taiwan issue is purely China’s internal affair, and no other country has the right to be the magistrate of the Taiwan issue. The Chinese side solemnly urges the US side to stop playing the “Taiwan card” and engage in “using Taiwan to control China,” to stop interfering in Taiwan affairs and interfering in China’s internal affairs, to stop supporting and conniving at the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces in various forms, to stop saying and doing one thing another on the Taiwan issue, to stop distorting and hollowing out the one-China principle, to scrupulously abide by the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three Sino-US joint communiques with practical actions, to earnestly implement the “four noes, one intention” commitment made by the US leader, and not to go farther and farther down the wrong and dangerous road”.
