IKORODU, Lagos, Nigeria – At least 2 passengers  have been confirmed dead and 15 others rescued alive when a ferryboat conveying passengers from Ikorodu jetty capsized few minutes after takeoff from Ipakodo Jetty in Ikorodu.

Among those dead are two females. According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, the boat was conveying 17 passengers  at the time of the incident early this morning.

Speaking on the incident, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Oluwafemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu said the 20 passenger capacity boat named “Rahael & Nike II” capsized due to suspected mechanical fault.

He said a combined team of Water Guards, Search and Rescue Team of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and LASEMA Response Teams were mobilized to scene of the incident.

He explained that while LASWA has instituted an investigation into the cause of this boat mishap, the Boat Captain is also under investigation by the relevant authorities.
