A MIDNIGHT horror has gripped eastern Lebanon after a wave of brutal Israeli airstrikes tore through a sleepy town, killing at least 15 people and leaving a trail of absolute devastation.
The late-night bombardments completely flattened residential buildings in Mashghara, a town nestled in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley. Local reports from news outlet Al Akhbar confirmed that alongside the 15 tragic fatalities, another 16 people have been rushed to nearby hospitals with severe injuries.
Horrifying footage circulating online captures the sheer panic of the aftermath. In one heart-wrenching clip, frantic rescue workers and locals can be seen digging with their bare hands in a desperate bid to save a young child buried beneath tons of twisted metal and concrete.
As daylight broke over the shattered town, the scene remained one of utter chaos. Emergency services and volunteer crews are currently locked in a race against time, clawing through the smoking ruins as search operations continue for dozens of missing people feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The strikes hit without warning, catching families asleep in their beds. One local witness described the moment the missiles struck:
”The sky lit up, and then the ground shook like an earthquake. There was no time to run. Whole homes just vanished into dust.”
The Lebanese Health Ministry has stated that women and children are among the casualties, with emergency teams working under intense pressure as the threat of further strikes looms over the region.
The latest bloodshed comes amid a sharp, dangerous escalation in hostilities. While Israel and Hezbollah had previously engaged in a fragile ceasefire agreed upon in late 2024, that truce effectively collapsed earlier this year.
Tensions exploded across the Middle East following high-stakes US and Israeli military operations against Iranian targets in late February 2025, which killed several top officials and reignited regional proxy battlegrounds.
Since then, southern and eastern Lebanon have been subjected to renewed, heavy aerial bombardments.
The Israeli military has defended its stepped-up campaign, claiming it is strictly targeting hidden Hezbollah infrastructure, weapons depots, and command centers operating within civilian zones. Just hours before the Mashghara attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a stark video message warning that the military would “increase the blows” and intensify operations against Hezbollah forces.
However, international observers have raised growing alarms over the staggering civilian toll. More than one million Lebanese citizens have been displaced from their homes since the resurgence of the conflict, and local health officials estimate that thousands of non-combatants have been killed or injured in the crossfire.
The timing of this latest tragedy is particularly sensitive. It occurs just three days before Lebanese and Israeli military delegations are scheduled to travel to Washington for direct, US-mediated talks aimed at hammering out a fresh ceasefire.
While the Lebanese government heavily favors a diplomatic solution to save the country from total collapse, the militant group Hezbollah has opposed the direct talks, vowing instead to keep fighting until all Israeli troops completely withdraw from Lebanese soil.
With more Israeli battalions being called up to the border, the tragedy in Mashghara has stoked fresh fears that the region is teetering on the edge of a full-scale, uncontainable war.
