National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Nigeria has said that it has received reports that the Joint Task Force (JTF) carried out extra-judicial killings, torture, rape and arbitrary detention in an efforts to fish out members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram from their areas of operation. There are indications that the Federal Government will soon merge the Independent and Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a move to implement the Stephen Oronsaye-led Presidential Committee on Rationalisation and Restructuring of Federal Government Parastatals. The committee had the mandate to look into over 220 parastatals in the country and recommend merger for those with overlapping functions. Lagos state government says it has so far screened no fewer than 65,000 primary schools pupils in its public primary schools for eye defects and impairments under her School Health Programme. The screening exercise, according to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris who spoke in Lagos over the weekend, is one of the strategies employed by government to reduce the incidence of childhood blindness and pupils dropping out of school or performing poorly as a result of poor vision. The Lagos State Government has said that it budgeted a total of N1.4 billion for scholarships in the 2013 budget to assist students of Lagos State origin in the various institutions of higher learning.
