BRISTOL CITY turned the FA Cup third round into a Saturday night slaughter, smashing five past a hapless Watford to book their place in the next round with room to spare.
The Robins were in no mood for sentiment as Danish dynamo Emil Riis spearheaded a ruthless 5-1 demolition that left the Hornets looking more like a swarm of flies.
Riis was the star of the show, bagging a clinical hat-trick and providing an assist in a performance that will have the Ashton Gate faithful dreaming of Wembley.
It took just two minutes for the hosts to draw blood. Neto Borges whipped in a delicious cross from the left, and Riis rose highest to power a downward header past a stranded Nathan Baxter.
Watford, who made eight changes to their starting XI, looked like a group of strangers.
While Vivaldo Semedo wasted a golden chance to level, City remained clinical. In the 37th minute, Jason Knight’s surging run sliced through the midfield, allowing Riis to turn provider for Anis Mehmeti to tap home a second.
The second half was a total collapse for Javi Gracia’s men.
Any hope of a Watford comeback was snuffed out in the 66th minute when Rob Atkinson met a Scott Twine free-kick with a towering header to make it 3-0.
Two minutes later, Riis grabbed his second of the night, coolly slotting home from another Borges delivery.
Watford substitute Jack Grieves managed to claw back a consolation goal in the 74th minute—his first for the club—but it only served to irritate the Robins.
Riis completed his treble just moments later, latching onto a ball from new recruit George Earthy to dink a cheeky finish over Baxter and send the home fans into delirium.
For Bristol City, this wasn’t just a win; it was a statement.
Gerhard Struber’s side showed a level of ruthlessness that has been missing at times this season, scoring five for the second successive home game.
While the Hornets head back to Hertfordshire to lick their wounds and focus on the league, the Robins fly into the fourth round with their chests out and their eyes on the prize.
