AWKA — Stakeholders and public commentators in Anambra State have called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo and members of his cabinet to redirect their energy toward governance, fulfill their campaign promises, and cease constant political friction with former governor and Labour Party leader, Mr. Peter Obi.
The call comes amid growing public discontent over persistent rhetoric targeted at Peter Obi by officials of the Anambra State Government. Critics argue that the administration ought to prioritize delivering on the grand economic agenda promised to the people of the state rather than engaging in politically motivated distractions.
When Professor Chukwuma Soludo campaigned for office, he outlined an ambitious vision to transform Anambra into a megacity—often dubbed the “African Dubai and Taiwan”. This vision promised world-class infrastructure, rapid industrialization, high-tech hubs, and a thriving business environment designed to halt capital flight and position Awka and Onitsha as global economic players.
However, observers note that despite being well into his tenure, the reality on the ground in Anambra State remains far from the promised transformation.
While the administration has undertaken specific road projects and urban cleanup drives, critics argue that foundational sectors—including security, public transport integration, and small-business support—continue to lag behind the high expectations set during his campaigns.
Public frustration has been further fueled by comparisons between Governor Soludo’s administration and the legacy of Peter Obi, who governed Anambra State from 2006 to 2014.
During his eight-year tenure, Obi earned widespread acclaim for financial prudence, massive investment in primary and secondary education, health infrastructure, and leaving behind significant savings and zero debt for the state. Supporters emphasize that Obi earned the lasting trust and admiration of the Anambra electorate because he strictly delivered on his commitments without excuses.
”What Peter Obi promised the people of Anambra, he delivered, and that is precisely why the people continue to hold him in high regard,” noted a community leader in Onitsha. “Instead of trying to diminish his achievements, the current administration should learn from his approach to prudent management and tangible delivery.”
Calls for Accountability and ‘Workings’
Political analysts and residents alike are urging Governor Soludo and his cabinet members to adopt a results-oriented approach rather than relying on political commentary. The consensus among citizens is a direct appeal to the governor: “Show workings.”
With local political conversations intensifying, key demands from state stakeholders include:
Infrastructure Completion: Accelerating key road corridors, urban drainage projects, and municipal updates in Awka, Nnewi, and Onitsha.
Security Stabilization: Addressing persistent security challenges to enable commerce and nighttime economic activity across local government areas.
Economic Support: Implementing direct policies that lower the cost of doing business for traders, informal sector workers, and local manufacturers.
As public scrutiny increases, the mandate from Anambra citizens remains unambiguous: Governor Soludo must move beyond political disputes and focus entirely on turning his administrative vision into a living reality for the people of the state.
