RAMALLAH, West Bank — An veteran American photojournalist was hospitalized on Friday after being severely beaten by masked Israeli settlers while documenting the annual Palestinian olive harvest in the occupied West Bank.
Heidi Levine, 63, a contract photographer for The Washington Post, sustained bone fractures, severe bruising, and cuts during the violent assault near the village of Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah.
”I was attacked, pushed to the ground, and luckily I was wearing my protective jacket and helmet. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t be here at all,” Ms. Levine said from her hospital bed, recalling that assailants kicked her repeatedly and stripped her of her camera equipment.
According to local witnesses and Palestinian Civil Affairs spokesman Imad Qaraqra, tens of masked assailants descended on terraced olive groves where local farmers and journalists were gathered. The group threw stones, set fire to olive trees, and attacked farmers and press workers with pepper spray and wooden sticks.
Colleagues and local medics managed to pull Ms. Levine to safety before she was transferred to a medical facility in Ramallah for emergency treatment.
The attack underscores the deepening peril faced by agricultural workers and media professionals during the West Bank’s autumn olive harvest—a critical economic and cultural season that has increasingly become a flashpoint for clashes.
Rights monitors have long noted that violence surrounding the harvest tends to spike, with extremist settler groups aiming to disrupt access to Palestinian farmland.
While Israeli security forces arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, no arrests were immediately reported. Rights groups such as Yesh Din have repeatedly pointed out that investigations and prosecutions following settler violence against Palestinians or foreign journalists remain exceptionally rare.
Ms. Levine is an acclaimed photojournalist with decades of experience covering conflict zones across the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
