Parents whose wards fainted a forth night ago at Ogba Junior School after inhaling a poisonous gas in their classroom Monday staged a peaceful protest to government house, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos calling on Governor Babatunde Fashola to hasten work on investigation surrounding gas emission in the area.

They stormed the office even as ongoing investigation revealed that a septic tank buried underneath the block of classrooms may be responsible for the perennial incident.

There was however a mild drama when the Chief Security Officer in the governor’s office prevented the aggrieved parents from having their way.

“Sorry, but you will need to write a formal letter to the governor stating what you wanted to do and the purpose,” the officer told the parents, adding that it was a breach of protocol to storm the office without prior notice.

One of the parents who identified himself as Ibikunle told the officer that the governor is aware of the issue at Ogba Junior School and that an emergency meeting with the governor was one of the ways to resolved the matter.

The aggrieved parents later met with Commissioners for the Environment, Tunji Bello; Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba; Special Duties, Wale Ahmed; and Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye.

The parents, who were led by Mrs. Omotoso and Ann, expressed worry over the fate of their children ahead of the semester examination starting next Monday.
While addressing the protesting parents, Commissioner for Education explained that the governor could not address them since he was presiding over a meeting but that government was already on top of the situation and that a lasting solution would be found.

Oladunjoye told the parents that a septic tank that was buried beneath the classrooms has been discovered and excavated.
“We are waiting for the final reports from relevant agencies and once we have that, a decision would be taken. But if nothing is heard by Friday, we might relocate the children on Monday.”
