RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Authorities in Saudi Arabia have okayed death penalty for five of the 11 people indicted for the murder of Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered in Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.
Addressing a press conference in Riyadh, Spokesman for Public Prosecution, said the fiver people confessed to killing the journalist and that head of the team negotiating the return of Jamal Khashoggi to Saudi Arabia ordered the murder of the journalist. He said those who collaborated in the murder of the journalists will be transferred to Turkey for prosecution.
According to him, investigations showed that the decision to form the team was made by the former Deputy President of the General Intelligence Presidency, and that the person who ordered the killing of the Saudi citizen and journalist on October 2, in the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul, was the leader of this negotiating team.
He said that 21 people are now under investigation for the murder and that 11 have been charged in the murder, out of which five will face death penalty. He however refused to mention names of those charged, stressing that the system of criminal procedure prohibits the disclosure of the names of the accused.
The spokesman said someone disabled the surveillance cameras at the consulate before carrying out the murder but that those who disabled the cameras were identified following investigations.
“The investigation also identified the individual who wore the victim’s clothes after the murder and disposed of the victim’s belongings in a trash receptacle, including his watch and glasses, after leaving the Consulate building”, he said,
Meanwhile, Turkey Foreign Minster, Mevlut Cavusoglu has described as unacceptable the reason advanced for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. He said he did not agree that the journalist was killed because he resisted.
“As he mention Khashoggi was cut into pieces. Certain devices were brought into the country, so it has been planned in advance, so the 15 people should be tried in Turkey”, he said adding that the Vienna Convention allows it though Khashoggi was murdered inside the Saudi Consolate.
