Lagos, July 6, 2016 – Not less than three people have been confirmed dead and two others injured when an unlatched container tumbled on seven commercial motorcycles and a minivan at Alakija, Bus Stop, on the Mile2/Badagry Expressway.
The accident, involved a 40 feet container with registration number KRD 526 XP, which lost control after a failed break and crashed into a commercial bus with registration number EPE 972 XH and thereafter fell on Okada riders and their commercial motorbikes at Alakija Bus Stop.
Confirming the incident, General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Michael Akindele said the Emergency Response Team (ERT) of the agency at Cappa in conjunction with the Lagos State Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, LASTMA officials ,FRSC , LASAMBUS and officials of CCEC Construction Company were involved in the recovery operation.
He said the commercial minivan and seven commercial motorcycles (Okada) were badly damaged as a result of the accident.
“Five persons were involved in the accident comprising 3 dead (all male, adult) while 2 persons sustained severe injuries and have been taken to the hospital for treatment”, he said.
He added that Eko Disco at Alakija was alerted to switch off the power supply in order to prevent any form of electrocution since an electric pole was also damaged. Akindele advised trailers owners and drivers to ensure proper checks and road worthiness of their trucks and drive within the approved speed limit.
He advised Okada riders to adhere to the traffic laws in order to avoid loss of lives and properties such as this. He said the police would conduct further investigation into the incident.
