STUTTGART, GERMANY – It was a tale of two talismans at the MHP Arena as VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen traded blows in a high-stakes 1-1 draw that left the Swabians looking over their shoulders in the Champions League race.

While Stuttgart boasted nearly 70% of the ball, it was Bremen’s midfield engine Jens Stage who silenced the home crowd early on.

The Great Dane, in the form of his life, proved once again why he is the heartbeat of this Werder side. In the 18th minute, Stage latched onto a pinpoint delivery from Yukinari Sugawara—who was a constant menace on the flank—to fire the visitors into a shock lead.

Stage didn’t just score; he dominated. Whether it was winning seven aerial duels or shielding his back three, he was the barricade Stuttgart simply couldn’t break down for over an hour.

Sebastian Hoeneß, sensing the game slipping away, turned to his bench and found his saviour in Ermedin Demirović. The Bosnian international has been the ultimate “break glass in case of emergency” option this season, and he delivered in the 61st minute.

After slick interplay involving the creative Bilal El Khannouss, Demirović found the half-yard of space he needed to slot home the equaliser.

It was his 15th goal involvements of a stellar campaign, proving that even when Stuttgart aren’t at their fluid best, they possess the individual star power to salvage results.

If Stage was the sword, young Mio Backhaus was the shield. The Bremen shot-stopper produced a string of vital saves to frustrate Deniz Undav, who worked tirelessly but found no luck in front of goal.

Backhaus’s composure in the dying embers of the match ensured the Green-Whites headed back north with a well-deserved point.

For Stuttgart, the result moves them back into fourth on goal difference, but with the chasing pack breathing down their necks, they’ll be wishing their stars had shone just a little brighter under the Sunday lights.

    Match Stats
    Goals: Stage (18′), Demirović (61′)
    Possession: Stuttgart 68.5% – 31.5% Bremen
Star Man: Jens Stage (Werder Bremen)
