ASHBURN, Va. — The 27-year-old son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was arrested late Sunday after authorities said he shot his mother, Mia Bieniemy, multiple times inside their Northern Virginia home.
Deputies with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office responded at approximately 7:32 p.m. to a report of gunfire in the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn, Virginia, a suburb situated roughly 30 miles west of Washington, D.C. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers located Mia Bieniemy, 57, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
She was immediately transported to a nearby medical center for treatment. Officials confirmed on Monday that she remains in stable condition following the attack.
Authorities arrested Elijah Zion Bieniemy at the scene without further incident. He has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside an occupied dwelling. Elijah Bieniemy is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. Investigators said there is no ongoing threat to the public, though the investigation remains open.
The residence in Ashburn was purchased during Eric Bieniemy’s tenure in the region when he served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders during the 2023 NFL season.
Chiefs Support and Training Camp Absence
Eric Bieniemy, who was in St. Joseph, Missouri, attending the Chiefs’ annual summer training camp at Missouri Western State University, abruptly stepped away from team operations on Monday to travel to Virginia and join his family.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the incident publicly during a routine briefing with reporters following practice.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,” Reid said. “Thoughts and prayers are with them.”
The Kansas City Chiefs organization also released a formal statement acknowledging the tragedy: “The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Background and Career Profile
Eric Bieniemy, 56, is one of the most prominent coaching figures in modern professional football, having served as a primary architect behind the Chiefs’ high-powered offensive system alongside Andy Reid and two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes.
A former standout running back at the University of Colorado, Bieniemy finished third in Heisman Trophy voting in 1990 before being selected in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft.
He played nine seasons in the league as a running back and kickoff returner for the San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Philadelphia Eagles, playing under Andy Reid during his final professional season in Philadelphia in 1999.
Transitioning to coaching in 2001, Bieniemy built an extensive resume across collegiate and professional ranks. He served as running backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2006 to 2010, mentoring Future Hall of Fame running back Adrian Peterson, before returning to Colorado as offensive coordinator.
In 2013, Bieniemy rejoined Reid in Kansas City as running backs coach. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018, directing top-ranked offenses that led to two Super Bowl championships (Super Bowl LIV and Super Bowl LVII) and three AFC titles during a dominant five-year run.
Seeking new play-calling autonomy, Bieniemy joined the Washington Commanders for the 2023 season. He later spent time in the college ranks at UCLA and worked on the coaching staff of the Chicago Bears before returning to Kansas City to resume his role as offensive coordinator.
Eric and Mia Bieniemy have been married for over three decades and have two adult sons, Eric Jr. and Elijah.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting, and formal court proceedings in Loudoun County General District Court are expected to begin later this week.
