BERLIN has sensationally slammed the door on Nigeria’s most outspoken politician, Femi Fani-Kayode, FFK, telling Abuja: “You’re not coming in!”
In a diplomatic dust-up that has sent shockwaves from the Rhine to the Niger, German officials have reportedly REJECTED the nomination of Femi Fani-Kayode as Nigeria’s new ambassador.
The firebrand former minister—known to his millions of followers as “FFK”—was expected to trade his trademark Twitter tirades for the silver service of the diplomatic circuit. But sources in Berlin say the German government has “politely but firmly” declined to accept his credentials.
TOO HOT TO HANDLE?
The snub comes just weeks after President Bola Tinubu’s administration named the controversial 65-year-old as its top pick for the plum Berlin posting.
But it seems FFK’s colorful past—and even more colorful vocabulary—proved a bit too much for the straight-laced Germans. A source close to the German Foreign Office whispered:
”An ambassador is supposed to build bridges, not burn them down with a single tweet. There were concerns his… shall we say, energetic style of communication didn’t quite mesh with the quiet world of international diplomacy.”
DIPLOMATIC DISASTER
It is a massive slap in the face for the Nigerian government, which had hoped to install the Oxford-educated lawyer in the heart of Europe.
Fani-Kayode, a man who has never met a camera he didn’t like, is famous for his fierce rhetoric and high-octane political flip-flops. While he’s a heavyweight back home, Berlin clearly decided they’d rather not have Nigeria’s “Master of Shade” setting up shop on their doorstep.
WHAT NEXT?
The “Agrément”—the formal agreement by a country to accept a foreign envoy—is usually a rubber-stamp job. To have it rejected is the ultimate “unfriending” in the world of global politics.
THE SNUB: Germany says “Nein” to Nigeria’s nomination.
THE REASON: Whispers of “incompatibility” over FFK’s fiery reputation.
THE FALLOUT: Nigeria now has to find a new man for Berlin while FFK stays home.
Abuja has remained tight-lipped on the rejection, but insiders say the hunt is already on for a “boring” replacement who won’t cause a Twitter storm before breakfast.
As for FFK? He’s likely already typing out a response. We suggest the German embassy turns off their notifications!
