KANO, Nigeria -The Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano has seen its fair share of historic nights, but few could match the sheer seismic shock delivered yesterday as NPFL newcomers Barau FC dismantled league-toppers Rivers United in a 4-1 thrashing.

While Barau are currently using the iconic 16,000-capacity venue as a temporary home while their Dambatta ground undergoes renovation, there was nothing “temporary” about the dominance they displayed on the Sani Abacha turf.

The stadium, famous for its intimidating atmosphere and storied history of hosting international tournaments, provided the perfect stage for the “Maliya Boys” to claim their biggest scalp since joining the top flight.

The sprawling Kano arena, usually the fortress of Kano Pillars, was draped in the colors of the Deputy Senate President’s side, and the vocal home support seemed to paralyze the visitors from the coast. Despite the Sani Abacha’s reputation for being a difficult place for any visiting team, Rivers United—who arrived sitting comfortably at the top of the table—looked completely out of depth on the expansive pitch.

The drama began early, though not in the way the home fans hoped. Osimaga Duke silenced the Kano crowd in just the 4th minute, tucking away a clinical finish to give Rivers United a 1-0 lead. For a moment, it looked like the giants would stroll through the afternoon.

However, the Sani Abacha magic soon took hold:
25th Minute: Usman Maidubuji restored parity from the penalty spot, sending the home support into a frenzy.

45+2 Minute: On the stroke of halftime, Jimmy Ambrose turned the game on its head, slotting home to ensure Barau walked into the tunnels with a 2-1 lead.

If the first half was a contest, the second was a coronation. Barau’s Kabiru Abdullahi turned the historic venue into his personal playground, striking twice in the 64th and 72nd minutes.

His clinical brace left the Rivers United defense in tatters and the Sani Abacha faithful chanting in celebration.

By the final whistle, the scoreline read 4-1—a result that reverberated across the Nigerian football landscape. For Barau, the Sani Abacha Stadium is no longer just a stop-gap; it has become a theater of dreams.

For Rivers United, it was a long, quiet flight back to Port Harcourt after being thoroughly schooled in the heart of Kano.
