CRAVEN COTTAGE – Fulham talisman Raúl Jiménez hammered home a priceless late winner to end Sunderland’s resistance and secure a gritty 1-0 victory for the Cottagers at Craven Cottage this afternoon.
The Mexican hotshot left it late, but his 84th-minute strike was enough to send the home faithful into raptures and leave the travelling Black Cats feeling thoroughly miserable.
The match had all the hallmarks of a frustrating goalless draw, with both defences proving stubborn and keepers making key saves.
Sunderland, in particular, looked determined to hold onto a hard-earned point, packing their midfield and frustrating the hosts.
But just as the clock ticked towards injury time, Jiménez—who had been buzzing around the box all afternoon—found the breakthrough.
A slick passing move down the right flank opened up space, and when the ball was drilled low across the box, the veteran striker pounced like a hungry predator. He took a touch to settle himself and then rifled a low shot past the despairing dive of the Sunderland keeper.
The goal was his first for the club since… well, who cares now?! It was a beauty, and it secured all three points for Marco Silva’s side in a game they simply had to win.
Sunderland boss Michael Beale will be fuming that his side couldn’t see out the final few minutes, but truth be told, Fulham dominated possession and deserved the victory.
The result moves Fulham up the table and gives them a massive confidence boost heading into the festive fixture pile-up.
For the Black Cats, it’s a bitter pill to swallow after a resilient performance, and they now need to dust themselves off quickly.
Speaking after the game, a beaming Marco Silva said: “Raúl is a top player. He showed his class and his composure when it mattered most. This was a hard-fought win, but we showed the spirit we have in this squad.”
FINAL WORD: It wasn’t pretty, but it was a massive three points for the Cottagers. Raúl Jiménez is the hero of the hour!
