GAZA, Palestine – On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian Journalist, the Palestinian Journalists Protection Center (PJPC) issued a forceful appeal to the international community and global human rights bodies, calling for immediate and intensified action to halt the systematic targeting of media professionals in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement released on Friday, the PJPC highlighted the catastrophic toll on Palestinian media workers since the start of the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza in October 2023.
The Center stated that more than 250 male and female journalists have been killed by Israeli army fire, in addition to hundreds wounded and families “completely annihilated.”
The PJPC framed these staggering figures as evidence of the “direct targeting of Palestinian journalism with the aim of silencing the truth and obscuring war crimes.”
The rights group argued that Israel’s “continued impunity” has emboldened it to persist in its actions, which include destroying media headquarters and stripping journalists of essential working tools.
In response, the Center has called for a transparent and independent international investigation to hold those responsible for these violations accountable. The PJPC stressed that the alleged actions constitute war crimes under international humanitarian law.
The statement underscored that solidarity with Palestinian journalists must be more than “symbolic slogans,” characterizing it as a “moral and humanitarian responsibility.”
Pressure on UN and ICC
The PJPC specifically urged the United Nations and international human rights organizations to exert pressure to immediately stop the targeting of journalists.
Furthermore, the Center called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to “urgently open cases” regarding the killings of Palestinian journalists. It also implored global media outlets to step up their coverage of the journalists’ plight and ensure their voices are amplified in international forums.
The statement concluded by praising the steadfastness of journalists working in Gaza, who continue their work despite “bombing, hunger, and siege.”
Their perseverance, the PJPC said, reflects their commitment to their people’s right to knowledge and truth, and the world must stand by them and protect their right to work in safety.
