Hunger Protest: NLC warns Tinubu against using brute force against widespread anger  

 Says ‘We cannot withdraw from protest we didn’t organise”

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has told the Federal Government of Nigeria, it cannot withdraw from a protest it did not organise, warning President Bola Tinubu not to use brute force on expression of widespread anger prevalent in the land.

The NLC issued the protest following pressure from government to halt the protest scheduled to tee off from August 1-10, 2024.

The hunger protest is coordinated online by Nigerian youths without any known leader and it is expected to kick off simultaneously across the federation, including Abuja.

In a statement NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero said it is only the organizers of the speculated national protest that can decide to pull out or continue the strike.

“Yet, the fact that the Nigeria Labour Congress is not the body organizing the protest does not mean that organised labour is oblivious of the dire living condition Nigerians have been subjected to by the harsh economic policies of government”, he said.

In either case, he said that the NLC stands in solidarity with the Nigerian people in this very trying and excruciating times.

He said that pursuant of the issues canvassed by the organizers, it has called on President Bola Tinubu to invite leaders of the protest for dialogue.

“We have advised that it will be counter productive for government to meet the widespread anger  in the land with brute force”, he said.

He called on all levels of government to do the needful, stressing that the voice of the people is the voice of God.
