Tyre Nichols: Memphis Police sacks Officer Preston Hemphill

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Memphis Police Department has terminated the appointment of officer Preston Hemphill over his culpability in the death of Tyre Nichols.
Trye Nichols was beaten and left untreated after sustaining bloody injuries at a police stop in Memphis. He died January 10, 2023 and was buried last week.
In a statement announcing the sack of Hemphill, the Memphis Police Department said that after a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the death of Tyre Nichols, the department determined that Officer Preston violated multiple department policies.

“Officer Preston Hemphill was departmentally charged and terminated from the Memphis Police Department for the following reasons: Personal conduct, truthfulness, Compliance with regulations to wit: Conducted Energy Weapon(TASER); Compliance with regulations to wit: Uniforms (issued equipment); Inventory and Processing Recovered Property.
The statement added that it is still an ongoing administrative investigation, adding that multiple MPD officers are under investigation for departmental policy violations.
It added that update regarding other actions will be made available in the coming days.
Preston Hemphill was hired by the Memphis Police Department in March, 2018.
