BERLIN – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will not table a vote of confidence in parliament on Wednesday, a government spokesman has confirmed, after days of political wrangling in Berlin.

“I can reassure you that the chancellor will not call a vote of confidence on Wednesday,” spokesman Steffen Hebestreit told reporters on Monday.

Scholz is due to give a statement in the Bundestag, or lower house of parliament, on Wednesday.

He has been under huge political pressure from opposition parties to call a vote of confidence immediately, instead of in January as he initially proposed.

The vote would likely result in new elections being held as Scholz is currently without a majority in the Bundestag after his three-party coalition collapsed last week.

Despite the chancellor signalling in an interview on Sunday that he could table the vote for before Christmas, Hebestreit said Scholz would decide the date alone if he cannot reach an agreement with the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) over passing a number of critical bills before holding new elections.
