Abia market computerises revenue collection, remits N31.628m to govt

ABA, Abia, Nigeria – The Eziukwu Road market in the commercial city of Aba, Abia State, has computerised its financial activities to plug loopholes in collection and management of traders association’s funds. 

The move, according to its leadership, led to the remittance of N31,628,000, as taxes and other approved levies to the state government for the year, 2023, by the traders.

In a letter to the chairman of the state internal revenue service, Prof Ogbonna Udochukwu, which was signed by the market association interim management committee chairman, Chief Alphonsus Udeigbo and secretary, Darlington Achonu, respectively, the association, said 1,392 traders in the market, were identified as having paid their dues to the authorities while an undisclosed number, refused to pay.

“That for IGR 2023, our market made a total payment of N31,620,000, from 1,392 traders in the market.

“Furthermore, we are happy to inform you that we have procured computer equipment and engaged competent ICT staff, for the total computerization of our activities from October, 2023 which has started yielding good results.”

It called on the state revenue service, to use it’s task force to bring pressure on the defaulters to make them honour their civic obligations to the government, stressing that with the new computerised system in place, more accurate taxes accruing to the government, will be collected and remitted without much stress, henceforth.

According to the statement, Eziukwu Road market traders’ association, is the first among the over 30 major markets operating in Abia, to computerise its activities for proper management of members and their activities.
