HAMBURG – A faulty dishwasher forced the interruption of an orchestra concert at the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg on Sunday.

The broken appliance on the 13th floor of the concert hall triggered a fire alarm, which forced the evacuation of the building in the middle of an ongoing performance by the renowned Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, according to a fire brigade spokesman.

Musicians, the audience and conductor Kent Nagano all had to leave the building. The interruption lasted for around an hour.

The performance was later resumed, according to a spokesman for the concert hall.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people have protested against a performance of Russian-born opera singer Anna Netrebko near Frankfurt, police said on Sunday.

Some 400 demonstrators gathered near the State Theatre of the German state of Hesse in the city of Wiesbaden, just west of Frankfurt, for a peaceful protest on Saturday evening, according to a police spokesman.

A renowned soprano, Netrebko has been criticized over her pro-Putin stance following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine ordered by the Russian president in February 2022.

Netrebko was previously met with protests during her performance at the May Festival in Wiesbaden last year.

Just days ago, a concert scheduled for June 1 in the Swiss city of Lucerne was canceled over Netrebok’s planned participation following pressure from the local government.

In the recent past, concerts with Netrebko, who holds dual Russian-Austrian citizenship, have been canceled in numerous Western countries. Her management maintains that Netrebko has publicly criticized the war in Ukraine.

The singer has since been invited back to the international stage, including performances at the Berlin State Opera in September and the Opera Ball in Vienna in February.
