IKORODU, Lagos, Nigeria – After keeping Nigerians waiting for more than eight months, a pathologist, Prof Shokunle Shoyemi today shocked Nigerians when he told the Lagos Coroner sitting in Ikorodu that the cause of death of the fast rising Afrobeat singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba better known as Mohbad remains unknown.
Prof Shoyemi told the coroner that the cause of death of the musician could not be ascertained because the body was too decomposed by the time an autopsy was performed.
Mobad died September 12, 2023, while his body was exhumed for autopsy, September 21, 2023, about eight days after he passed.
Prof Shoyemi told the Coroner, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi that despite extensive efforts, the advanced state of decomposition rendered a conclusive autopsy impossible adding that the situation left many questions about the circumstances surrounding his death unanswered. He did not say anything about the toxicology test that Lagos State Counsel Mr. O. Akinde said was ongoing in the United States when he appeared before Shotobi November 22, 2023.
He told the court the autopsy was conducted at the Lagos state University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in which photographs were taken for documentation. Prof. Shokunle told the court that the body of the late singer Mohbad was not embalmed and had began to decompose before it was brought for autopsy.
After the results came out, he said they discovered puritin, caffeine and paracetamol and a superficial injury on the left hand. He said Mohbad’s death was concluded as “uncertain”.
Prof Shokunle also told the court that nothing contributed to the death and stressed in addition that the information about the late Mohbad’s neck being bent and still bleeding after death was false. He said the late singer’s neck was still okay.
Shokunle told the Coroner court that when the body was to be exhumed, they found that heavy stones were placed on top of the grave which took them like four hours to remove.
Owodeni Ibrahim, a childhood friend of Mohbad who was also cross examined on the death of the singer said he and the late singer knew eachother since childhood since secondary school days.
Ibrahim told the court that he knew Ilerioluwa (Mohbad) to be a calm, smart and a hardworking guy but never knew him to be unstable. “Every time I see Mohbad he is always okay” he said. Ibrahim told the coroner court that he and the late singer were on their way to a show from Lekki to Ikorodu with the wife of the late singer known as Cynthia, with the driver of the car and two other friends of the late singer when Mohbad and his wife got into an argument in the car and he tried to calm Mohbad down but Mohbad got angry with him for not supporting him.
He said he got down from the car to clear the road while the late singer continued quarreling with the wife. Ibrahim also told the court that Cynthia who was the wife of the late Mohbad got angry when Mohbad told her he doesn’t know if the baby between them belongs to him because he only met with her once and later claimed to be pregnant for him.
Ibrahim told the court that he advised Mohbad not to marry his spouse and that Mohbad told her to stay away from him. He also told the court that he noticed that Mohbad’s face was swollen when he asked him what happened he replied that he was shooting a video with Omoniyi Temidayo , known professionally as Zlatan Ibile, when Sammy Larry came to attack him.
He said he had reported it to the police. The Coroner, Magistrate Shotobi adjourned the matter June 11, 2024.
