LATVIA – Germany’s Julia Taubitz claimed the luge World Cup overall title despite a third-place finish in Sigulda, Latvia on Saturday.

“Aren’t we a beautiful couple?” Taubitz said after she kissed the World Cup trophy – a crystal sphere. This was her fourth overall title and third consecutive triumph.

“It’s unbelievable. I’ve never won the overall World Cup this early. I can just enjoy the next two races,” she told broadcaster ARD.

“It was the most beautiful one. This was my best season.”

There are still two events to go, but second-placed Anna Berreiter, who won Saturday’s race, can’t reach compatriot Taubitz anymore.

Taubitz also continued an impressive series for Germany: Since 1999, only German athletes have won the women’s overall World Cup title.

Germany could also claim the men’s overall title with Max Langenhan. He is chasing his first World Cup title and currently tops the standings, 176 points ahead of Austria’s Jonas Müller.
