MUNICH – Former RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl will be made head of sport at German champions Bayern Munich, Germany’s Sky TV reported on Monday.
The 50-year-old will receive a long contract and should start in March, the report added, with confirmation coming in February once Bayern’s board has rubber-stamped the appointment.
Eberl was sacked in September after a short spell at Leipzig, with the club criticizing his commitment. Speculation swirled that he had been talking to Bayern.
His appointment in Munich would create a new layer of management at the Bundesliga giants.
Chief executive Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic were sacked at the end of last season after the bungled exit of ex-coach Julian Nagelsmann and Bayern only just sneaking an 11th straight title.
Jan-Christian Dreesen was brought in as chief executive and Christoph Freund as sporting director. Eberl would effectively sit between the two and is expected to have a seat on the board, which is headed by president Herbert Hainer. Uli Hoeneß is honorary president.
