BAYERN – Goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs has revealed that she has cancer and won’t be playing for her Bayern Munich team and the Germany national team for an indefinite period.
Grohs said in a statement published by Bayern on Saturday that she was diagnosed with a malignant tumour. She will now begin the appropriate treatment and fully concentrate on her recovery.
“The disease is a challenge that I never thought I would have to overcome.
“But I’m sure that with the help I’m now getting from all sides, I’ll make it and get completely well again,” Grohs said.
She has played for Bayern since 2019, winning the women’s Bundesliga three times in the period.
She was recently named to the Germany national team by coach Christian Wück but had to decline the invitation due to a tonsillectomy.
Bayern said that both parties have agreed on an early contract extension until June 30, 2026.
“In moments like these, sport is in the background. Our club, together with the entire Bayern family, stands behind Mala Grohs.
“Mala is a great, strong personality and she will receive all the help we can give her and that she needs to get well again,” Bayern president Herbert Hainer said.
