BERLIN – Former German national player Tabea Kemme has criticized the behaviour of the German Football Association (DFB) in the kissing scandal surrounding former top Spanish official Luis Rubiales.

“The DFB does not have a clear position regarding the ‘Rubiales case’ – even still today. People are rubbing their eyes in bewilderment,” the 31-year-old wrote in her column for the German news portal T-Online.

While the German national players and other national associations, including Sweden, had decided to take a stand, the DFB would “fall into a loyalty trap again and again,” Kemme added.

“DFB workshops always feature developed guidelines where values such as respect and working together are propagated. With all due respect, this is all bullshit if it’s not put into action.”

She herself had felt “a lot of headwind” for her public show of solidarity with world champion Jennifer Hermoso, who was kissed on the lips by Spain’s ex-association head Rubiales at the World Cup victory ceremony last month.

This showed her “that even in Germany, within an existing employer-employee relationship, problems can arise if you take a certain stance.”

Kemme wore the Spanish national jersey with Hermoso’s number 10 at the Bundesliga match between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern Munich in early September while working as a pundit for the German TV channel Sky.
