BERLIN – Germany’s Jule Niemeier had to retire injured from her Berlin last-16 clash on Thursday. The 23-year-old slipped in the second set at 5-5 against Czech player Marketa Vondrousova and hurt her wrist on her hitting hand.

She tried to play again after receiving treatment but bowed out 6-3 5-6, meaning all three Germans are out of the Berlin grass tournament.

Niemeier opened up by stunning champion Ons Jabeur of Tunisia at the Steffi-Graf-Stadion earlier in the week.
