ITALY – Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz have little time to celebrate their historic ATP Finals triumph as they were set to travel to Spain on Monday for the Davis Cup Finals.
Pütz and Krawietz became the first players from Germany to win the doubles title at the season-ender when they beat world ranking leaders Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador and Mate Pavic of Croatia 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6) on Sunday in Italy.
“I don’t know how to put it into words, it’s an amazing achievement from us,” Krawietz said post-match. I’m very proud of us, we are proud of the whole team, everyone at home. To end the year here winning the title, it’s unbelievable.”
Krawietz named the title “very special” and said they would celebrate because “if you don’t celebrate this title which one would you celebrate then?”
There is also Pütz’ 37th birthday on Tuesday, when the US Open runners-up will have already arrived in Malaga from Turin.
Germany face Canada in the Davis Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday, and team captain Michael Kohlmann said he hoped that Pütz and Krawietz can do their share in the absence of top star Alexander Zverev, a singles semi-finalist in Turin.
“We hope that they can continue their winning ways at the Davis Cup Finals,” Kohlmann said, naming the Turin title “the culmination of their partnership.”
