PARIS –  Japan’s Miyu Kato and German Tim Pütz claimed the French Open mixed doubles title on Thursday, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 against former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu and Michael Venus.

Kato and Pütz had only registered shortly before the deadline to play together at the Paris grand slam.

They levelled the sets after a ninth-game break in the second set against Canada’s Andreescu and New Zealander Venus, and then won five points in a row from 3-3 to 8-3 in the ensuing match tie break en route to victory on first match point.

Pütz is only the third German to win a mixed doubles title at Roland Garros, following Cilly Aussem in 1930 and Anna-Lena Grönefeld in 2014.
