DORTMUND – Bayern Munich midfielder Thomas Müller asked his team-mates to have a “goldfish mentality” in the final spurt of the Bundesliga title race.
According to popular belief, goldfish have very poor memory, and therefore they cannot remember one moment from another.
“With a memory of only 10 seconds, automatically looking ahead is the order of the day. That applies to us now, too. We have to shake off the past games and experiences and concentrate on what is important now,” the player wrote in his newsletter.
Müller stressed that it’s too late to correct anything fundamental or to make amends, and “now we have to see every action as decisive.”
He recalled the month of April as “an absolute disappointment” to coach Thomas Tuchel, who joined Bayern late March, due to elimination from the German Cup and the Champions League.
“But now is not the right time for a large-scale investigation of the causes. The course of the season and an opponent that was also not quite consistent over the season gave us the opportunity to be just ahead in the title race,” Müller wrote.
With four games to go, Bayern top the Bundesliga ahead of Borussia Dortmund by a point. While Bayern visit Werder Bremen on Saturday, Dortmund host VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday.
