HAMBURG – SV Hamburg have parted ways with coach Steffen Baumgart, the German second division club said in a statement on Sunday.
“We part ways with head coach Steffen Baumgart. The assistant coaches Rene Wagner and Kevin McKenna will also be released. Merlin Polzin will take over on an interim basis,” Hamburg said on X.
Baumgart was retained as coach after the traditional German club finished fourth in the past season.
But 13 games into the new term, Hamburg have five wins, five draws and three defeats as they sit in seventh, four points behind second division leaders SC Paderborn.
Baumgart was dismissed after a run of five winless games across all competitions, including the German Cup elimination to Freiburg.
Hamburg were relegated for a first time in 2018 and since then had four fourth-place finishes while losing play-offs in 2022 and 2023 after coming third.
The second division champion and the runner-up secure direct promotion to the Bundesliga, while the third-placed plays a play-off for a spot in the top tier.
