IKOYI, Lagos – Ms Kafayat Usman, one of the nurses at Dowen College today told the Coroner sitting in Ikeja, Lagos that she had no physical contact with the late 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni Jnr., who was allegedly beaten up by some senior students.
Kafayat, who joined the school Sept. 4, 2021 as a full time nurse refused to hold on to the Holy Quaran to swear since she was menstruating. She however asserted that she worked as a full time nurse from Monday to Friday.
While responding to questions from the Coroner, Mr Mikhail Kadiri, said she did not have any contact with the deceased in the course of her work.
“I did not know him and I had no physical contact with him. I have never attended to him. I work as a full time nurse in Dowen College but I am a day nurse. I work from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m., Monday to Friday. I do not work on weekends,” she said.
“It will be wrong if it was suggested by anybody that you massaged and attended to the deceased in anyway whatsoever?,”
The witness replied in the affirmative. In a cross-examination by the counsel to the Oromoni’s family, led by Mr A.E. Efole, the witness, who said she was not aware that the deceased was treated sometimes in April 2021, told the court that the school sick bay was not opened on weekends
“Since you do not work on weekends, who takes care of sick students on weekends?,” Efole asked.
“The sick bay is not opened on weekend. I became aware of the deceased case on Nov. 30, 2021 in the school premises. Dr. Bisiriyu and I both resume and close at the same time. We both work from Monday to Friday. I am not aware if she is a doctor in any American Hospital,” she said.
The witness said she did not make any statement to the police when she became aware of the death of the deceased. She confirmed to the court that Ms Omobola Kayode was her senior and would be surprised to hear that she said they are equal in rank. The coroner adjourned proceedings until April 5 for continuation of hearing.
