ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigerians today woke up once again to another tale of bullying, this time at the prestigious Lead British School Abuja with Maryam Hassan assaulting Namtira Bwala, a fellow student in broad daylight unchallenged.

Maryam Hassan assaulted Namtira with multiple slaps while she was standing in the school hall. Not even her lack of retaliation could soften the heart of Maryam Hassan, it rather emboldened her.

Even when Namtira changed location and decided to take a seat by her schoolmates,  Maryam was once more at her side, hurling one slap after the other on her, but she was calm and refused to retaliate.

While Namtira caught the figure of a well brought up girl, Maryam Hassam seems otherwise.

This scenario only highlights the deep rooted nature of bullying at Lead British School, Abuja.

Some students who have been exposed to similar incidents in the school relate they have told their parents who failed to believe their stories. Besides, allegations are rife that the school authority does not take serious issues of bullying among students.

A student who did not mention her name said things worse than bullying take place in this prestigious school.

According to her, a girl brought a knife to school and used it to slice off the flesh of a seven year old boy. “The punishment the girl got was just two days suspension”, the student said after her parents interfaced with the school authority.

“The boy’s parents just took him out of the school and when we were confronting the girl about what she did, the head of the school and other teachers were shouting at us and some of us got punished. Things like this always happen in Lead British School”, she said.

Reacting to the development, the school said it has set up a committee to investigate allegation of bullying in the school.

“The team has been gathering information, including reviewing video footage and interviewing witnesses to understand the full scope of the incident and identify the immediate and remote causes”.

In a statement, the school said it is reviewing its anti-bullying policies to see where to make improvement and appealed to members of the public for understanding.
