NOVGOROD, Russia – A thriller of the highest order best describes the encounter between Russia and Croatia as both team thrilled a capacity filled stadium in the clash to grab a semi final ticket in the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia.
It was a game that was filled with suspense even as each team tries to outclass the other. But it was Russia that took the lead when Dennis Cherychev found back of the net in the 31st minutes.
Croatia equalised through Andrej Kramaric in the 39th minutes. Scorecard at halftime was 1-1.
Both teams came into the second half very determined to outclass eachother. This time it was Croatia that got lucky and took the lead through Domagoj Vida in the 100th minutes to make it 2-1.
At this stage, the Russian fans became very tense but relief came for the Russians in 115 minutes through Fernandez and that took the game into penalty shot-out.
It was Croatia that went through to the Semi Final on 4-3 win on penalty.
