RUSSIA – The samba boys of Brazil became the latest casualty among the big teams to crash out of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia. Earlier, the likes of Argentina, Portugal and some other big teams exited at the knock-out stage.
Although bookmakers had tipped Brazil, but it was Belgium that carried the day, taking Brazil out of the tournament with a 2:1 margin. Belgium came into the game very strong and took the lead in the 13 minutes when Fernandinho found the back of the net. The Belgian team intensified their attack and once more the Brazilian defence caved in the 31st minutes, leading to a second goal when Kevin De Bruyne connected a pass from Romelu Lukaku and found the net, putting scoreline at 2:0 by half time.
The Brazilian team came in well prepared in the second half but the effort was not good enough until the 76th minutes when Renato Augusto connected a high ball from Phillipe Courtinho with his head and succeeded in hitting the net to make it 2:1. From that minute onward, the Brazilians were on fire but inaccurate shots by Naymar and other strikers led to the exit of Brazil at this stage from the Russia 2018 tournament.
Brazil however had ball possession 57 percent against 43 percent by Belgium. Brazil had 9 shots on target while Belgium had just 3.
Belgium will now take on France in the Semifinal to book a final ticket.
