ABUJA,Nigeria – Lawmaker, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye has decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The senator who has been in the news, following his arrest, hospitalisation and eventual arraignment returned to the red chamber today and crossed over to the PDP lawmakers and sat in their midst.
Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbodiyan, announced the development on his tweeter page, wherein he stated,
“This Morning, @Sen_dino_melaye crossed the aisle of the Red Chamber to the “Comfortable” and “People-Oriented” @OfficialPDPNig side”, he said.
The problem of Melaye started when he was declared wanted by police on allegation of gun running. His house in Abuja was later barricaded, forcing the senator to surrender himself to police. He was later alleged by police to have jumped out of the van conveying him to Lokoja for arraignment.
He was later arraigned in Lokoja and granted bail in the sum of N10 million with one surety in like sum. Lawyer to Melaye, Chief Mike Ozekhome(SAN) had argued that the continued incarceration of the senator will geopadise his health conduction and urged the court to grant his client bail. He submitted that there was nothing to show the court that the defendant would jump bail.
Ruling on his bail application, Justice Nasir Ajana admitted the senator to bail in the sum of N10 million with one surety in like sum.
