December 28, 2014 – The Interview, the controversial film put together by Sony Pictures failed to put up an impressive showing at the weekend even when experts had predicted that it would take the shine off other films following the controversy that trailed it emergence as the US and North Korea continued to banter words over hacking of Sony Pictures allegedly by North Korea.
It gave way to The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies which returned $41.420 million to Werner Brothers to retain the top spot at the weekend. Unbroken, a new film just entering the market rallied to number 2 when it made $31.748 million from 3,131 theatres where it was exhibited in the US.
Into the Woods, another new film from the stable of Buena Vista made it to number 3 at the weekend when it returned $31.021 million to the marketer after passing through 2, 440 film viewing centres in the US.
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb which was number 2 last week was pushed down to number 4 when sales fell to $20.6 million in box office sales. Annie which was number 3 last week tumbled to number 5 in box office chart when it returned just $16.6 million to Sony Pictures.
Other new films that made it to the box office during the week are The Gambler by Paramount Pictures, Big Eyes and the controversial The Interview which returned just $1.811 million to Sony pictures from 331 theatres where it was exhibited to occupy the 16th position on the chart. Others are American Sniper, Selma, Two Days, One Night and Leviathan.
