October 28, 2014 – Minority Leader in the House of Representative, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has said that Speaker of the House of Representative, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal will not step down as Speaker even though he has defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC).
The Minority Leader made the remarks at a press conference after the speaker announced his decision and adjourned sitting till December 1, 2014.
He described the speaker as a bridge builder who considers national interest above every other interest.
We welcome and embrace the Speaker, ever since this crisis started, in PDP, which led to the formation of the new PDP and the defection of 5 PDP governors and 27 PDP members to the APC and the former merger of the New PDP into APC we have all along hoped we are proud to acknowledge that the speaker remains not only a member of the House of Representatives but also the Speaker.
“This position is consistent with the law as practiced in a presidential system of government. I am sure keen observers of activities in the house and those who follow activities of the house of reps will bear witness to the fact that Hon. Tambuwal has been a bridge builder, he has cut across party lines and he has always put national interest above party interest in all the decision he took in the house. We believe and we trust that even with this switch to the APC, he will continue to do that and live with that principle”, he said at the press conference.
